Monterey Bay Stories

Day One
10 July 2004

1955 Departed Coyote Point Harbor to ride the strong ebb to somewhere
in San Francisco. We're not making the same mistake we made last year
by riding the ebb out the gate.

2232 Anchored in Clipper Cove.

Day Two
11 July 2003

0730 Beautiful morning! Coffee and weather report (NW @ 11kts at HMB buoy).

0810 Underway via N of Treasure Island.

1005 Weather forcaster nuts. Fog, Small Craft Advisories, Gusts to 30.
Beautiful and warm on Richardson Bay. Guess where we're going.

1613 Still anchored in Richardson Bay. Beautiful but hot.

Day Three
12 July 2003

0909 Still anchored in Richardson Bay. Peaceful night except slapping cables
in mast. Forgot ice...ran refer...batteries low. Annoying people by running
generator, but being Monday, there are few to annoy.

1041 Weigh anchor. Head for Sausalito for ice and fuel.

1214 Side tie at Schoonmaker Point Marina. Plugged in to run charger.

1732 Took SunShower. Teresa gushing after reading her camera manual.

Day Four
13 July 2003

0835 Another peaceful night. Most annoying noise was clock ticking. Morning
fog. Filled water tanks. Filled SunShower. Dumped trash.

0935 Departed Schoonmaker. Destination Half Moon Bay. Cloudy with light
to moderate winds.

1005 Under Golden Gate Bridge. Dolphins.

1101 Reefed main and reefed jib. Engine off.

1249 It's mellow out here. Good day for going N. Hope we see this in a
week.

1258 No wind. Motor on.

1458 Dropped the hook in wind shadow of Pillar Point Harbor, next to the
outer breakwater.

1755 Teresa, currently in the shower washing her hair, just got a lesson
in wildlife photography. While getting closer and closer to a friendly
sea lion, she was "shat upon" by a pelican. She wore a very fishy smell.

Day Five
14 July 2003

0735 Calm night. Could hear the breakers. Slept well (both). Morning
overcast but decks dry. Buoy report says NW @ 7 seas 3'/6 sec.

0815 Depart HMB. Breeze/Overcast.

0858 Reefed main & full jib with motor @ 1500 to charge batteries. Looks
like we may get some wind.

1010 Saw whales. Too slow on camera. Killed engine. Under same reefed
main and jib (The Rui).

1059 Still under sail. Nice but overcast.

1141 Changed course to Davenport.

1255 Had some good whale sightings. Saw a Grey...blow, back, and tail.
Teresa got video. All is well.

1531 Blustery downwind ride past Davenport. More whales and Risso's Dolphins.
Contacted Double Play by cell phone. They're just behind us. Doing
7.2 kts over the bottom.

1800 Arrived in Capitola just ahead of Double Play. Flip-flop overboard
drill almost cost us the trophy, but in life-and-death situations Teresa
performs quite well. It's windy and cool.

Day Six
15 July 2003

0735 Beautiful morning in Capitola. It got calm last night, but by that time we
were fast asleep after dinner and "a few" at Zelda's.

2358 To top off a totally mellow day, we joined Don and Terri for dinner and then
had our ears assaulted at the Fog Bank kareoke night. When we went to return
to the boats, we were locked in Capitola. The local police arrived to free us
after Dudley had already demonstrated his sailing resourcefulness by climbing
the gate and rowing the dink ashore.

Day Seven
16 July 2003

0945 Departed Capitola after another comfy night. Destination Santa Cruz.
Looked like the fog was going to dominate the morning, but the early morning
heat won.

1009 Engine overheated. After checking filter, coolant, impeller: found raw
water intake plugged with kelp. Removed strainer and used coat hangar to
unplug. Back running again toward Santa Cruz.

1153 Moored to "A" dock (closest to Aldo's). Filling water, charging, refer.
Teresa has rowed across to pay harbormaster.

Day Eight
17 July 2003

1921 Another nice day in Santa Cruz watching the goings on. Pumped up Zodiac
and raced Don. He won the motoring division; I won the rowing division.
Double Play left in early afternoon. We puttered around the marina
and showered. Waiting for Ryan to arrive to take Teresa's spot for a couple
of days.

Day Nine
18 July 2003

0853 Ryan arrived about 8PM last night on his new tires & rims. Dinner at
Rosa's. Teresa drove tires & rims home. Ryan and Dudley rowed around the
marina. Fell asleep in cockpit listening to 70s rock from Crow's Nest. Calm
night. Breakfast at Also's. Getting ready to depart for a sail. Hoping to
drop dink off at Double Play (now anchored off Boardwalk).

1041 Departed Santa Cruz Harbor after 1-hour saga involving a cracked gas can.
It's not easy to get rid of such a thing, and being responsible enough not to
dump it into a trash can, I ran around the harbor asking for advice before SCYC
finally agreed to take the fuel and dump the can. Dropped dink at Double Play.

Day Ten
19 July 2003

0807 Ryan and I a wonderful sail yesterday. Winds 15-20kts. Beam reach out
12 NM. Beam reach in 12 NM. Anchored at Boardwalk at 1500. Jitterbug arrived.
Visited for a while. Ryan baked a cake for dinner. We sat in the cockpit
listening to our music amid the screams of teenage girls from the Boardwalk.

0815 Plotted yesterday's position as 36 45.92' 122 02.00'. Weather report
says High moving N bringing increased NW winds through Thursday. Currently
very cloudy. Gary and Claudette reported thick fog on yesterday's sail down
the coast (and conditions as nasty as any they saw across the Atlantic).
Glad to be at anchor.

0931 Deflated *#!@^% dink (Zodiac), weighed anchor, motoring toward Santa Cruz.

Day Eleven
20 July 2003

1048 After leaving the Boardwalk anchorage yesterday, Ryan and Dudley motored to
Santa Cruz Harbor for breakfast at Aldo's. Teresa arrived about noon. The
surge at the guest dock was terrible. Waves were crashing on the breakwater.

After Ryan left, we contacted Double Play whom had plans to move to
Capitola. We headed straight there, anchored, and watched the surfers as
the waves broke along the shore only about 100 yards from the boat. Riding
the swells at anchor and watching breakers so close was awesome.

Ate a nice dinner and headed over to Double Play for Happy Hour. Had
a jolly time and returned to KO for another peaceful night. The waves
are still breaking this morning with lots of surfers again very close.

1622 Had a close encounter with a couple of otters and a couple of dolphins.
Watched otters at 6' range for half and hour...eating and washing. Awesome!
All this from the dink (Achilles) which I rowed into a kelp bed and held onto
a stalk for an anchor.

Day Twelve
21 July 2003

0943 Last night was a bit rougher and this morning a bit gloomier than it has
been. Had a good sleep after skipping Happy Hour and listening to the Giants
beat Arizona. Making coffee. Ryan is taking the day off to join us again
[Note: He never made it due to a screw-up with his pay check]

1125 Weighed anchor in Capitola and immediately snagged kelp in the prop.
Some reverse/forward action finally freed it all. Heading to Santa Cruz to
re-supply.

1330 Tied up at Santa Cruz guest dock. Teresa paid harbormaster and met a
mail carrier while Dudley re-watered and re-charged.

2029 Went out on Jitterbug for Wednesday night races. Almost as fast
as a Santa Cruz 70. Heading to SCYC.

Day Thirteen
22 July 2003

0847 Had a good time at SCYC, then spent some time on Double Play before
hitting the rack. Smooth, quiet night.

1239 Breakfast at Aldo's w/ Don and Terri. Checking alternator, found dust from
belt and decided to replace with new Napa 3VX400 50 I had on hand.

2154 Went for row and readied the boat for trip N. WX still says S winds close
to shore thru Saturday. Dinner at Brew Pub. Margaritas at Rosa's. Beer and
such on Double Play. 6AM wake-up. Good night.

Day Fourteen
23 July 2003

0643 At fuel dock (no diesel). Preparing to depart. Overcast and drizzly.
Picked up water, beer, and ice.

0725 Motoring 1.5 miles offshore. Double Play just ahead. Fog, drizzle,
light swell, no wind.

0843 Passing Davenport cement plant close to shore.

1003 Passing Ano Nuevo. Still close to shore and Double Play. High
overcast clearing to coast, light swell, no wind.

1204 Passing Pomponio. Very smooth seas.

1356 Entered Pillar Point Harbor.

1405 Anchored.

Day Fifteen
24 July 2003

0730 Harbor dink tour with Don and Terri last evening while we awaited the
arrival of Jitterbug. Dinner at Ketch Joannie. Back ot KO. Sat in cockpit
in thick fog. Planning on leaving for home today (we're out of coffee but
Teresa squeezed out one last cup).

0829 Departed HMB after circling DP and JB to say "Bye!". Don
still in bed. Drizzly and overcast.

0946 High overcast, light swell, very light winds from S.

1245 Under the Golden Gate Bridge.

1350 Finally some sun and wind. PacBell and SF in background.

1525 KO safely home with crew 8-) 8-)
